Duck Valley Math and Science Camp, Fall 2022
North American Native Research and Education Foundation (NANREF) has many objectives. One is what Audrey Shenandoah has shared (Wisdom keepers, Wall and Arden, 1990). “With one in mind we address our acknowledgements, respect, and gratefulness to all the sacred cycle of life. We as humans must remember to be humble and acknowledge the gifts we use so freely in our lives.
The objective of this trip was to enhance Math and Science curriculum. Especially since the school has no math teacher for the year. All math is now done on line.
An objective of introducing these miniature looms was to allow students a different ownership of their mathematics. In the activity students were shown the mechanics of how to place beads on the loom. Beyond this, each student chose her/his/their design, chose the colors and made decisions about how this all came together in their personal story.
These looms allow students to personally engage with designs of their choosing. While some may see a random array of colors, we have come to understand that students are very purposeful in how they arrange their beads and frequently have a narrative that compliments their design.
The looms are simple designs made from repurposed two by two lumber.
In the end, Neil deGrasse Tyson (2022 Starry Messenger Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization p.216) has stated that humans have curiosity and wonder in ourselves about the entire Cosmos.
As a teacher, I believe this statement by Neil and as teachers we should cultivate this notion in our students. Learning about Math and Science should and could be fun and full of curiosity! You can see we reached our objectives by the smiles and excitement on the student’s face.
